Aerospace
A challenge for the aviation electronics
As high-energy cosmic rays and solar particles strike the outer layers of the atmosphere, high-energy protons and neutrons are liberated and showered toward the surface of the earth, then it gets filtered when the atmospheric density increases near sea level. The neutrons flux is a function of altitude and latitude.
Especially at regular aircraft altitude (30,000
feet) the high-energy neutrons flux can be 100 times greater than at
sea
level. As a result,neutrons-induced single event effects are of a
particular concern in avionics applications.
